Today’s children grow up in a world where the Internet, games and smartphones are part of everyday life. There’s nothing wrong with that — as long as the online world doesn’t start taking over the real one.

Cyber addiction is a behavioural addiction — one that isn’t linked to a substance, but to a specific behaviour. In this case, it means compulsive, hard-to-control use of digital devices such as phones, computers, the Internet or social media.

How Does It Start?

Usually slowly — almost unnoticed.A child reaches for their phone out of boredom, then out of habit, and finally — out of need. When putting the phone away causes anger, anxiety or sadness, it may be the first warning sign that something is wrong.

Studies show that children start using mobile devices as early as 8–10 years old, and around 20% of teenagers admit they feel addicted to their phones.

Signs of Cyber Addiction May Include:

  • Loss of control over time spent online

  • Neglecting schoolwork, sleep or relationships with family

  • Irritability or anger when disconnected from the Internet

  • Lack of interest in offline activities

  • Lying about time spent online

Why Does It Matter?

Because cyber addiction doesn’t just affect the child — it affects the whole family: daily routines, relationships and emotions.A child who feels lonely, overwhelmed or misunderstood may seek comfort in a space where they feel safe — the virtual world.

That’s why prevention begins with connection — not prohibition.

How You Can Help as a Parent:

  • Be curious about what your child does online, not only how much time they spend there

  • Set clear and consistent screen-time rules together

  • Be a role model — put your own phone down when talking to your child

  • Offer shared offline activities

  • Talk about the emotions that come with being online
