hildren today live in a fast-paced world filled with school demands, stimulation and strong emotions. It’s no surprise that many of them struggle to slow down and relax in the evening. One of the most gentle and effective tools to help children unwind is progressive muscle relaxation.

This technique guides children through tensing and relaxing different muscle groups, helping them understand the difference between tension and calm. It’s short, pleasant and suitable even for younger children.

Why does progressive relaxation work?

Regular practice helps children:

  • release physical tension built up throughout the day

  • calm their nervous system

  • fall asleep more easily

  • reduce anxiety and emotional overload

  • develop healthy ways of managing stress

For children who struggle with winding down, overstimulation, anxiety or emotional outbursts, this method can make a noticeable difference.

When is it most helpful?

Progressive relaxation works especially well:

  • in the evening as part of a calming bedtime routine

  • after a stressful event or school day

  • during moments of emotional overwhelm

  • as a regular part of emotional regulation strategies

  • in therapeutic work to support grounding and body awareness

It requires no preparation — just a few minutes in a quiet, comfortable space.

Try it at home – here’s a guided version

Guided versions for kids are usually short, soothing and easy to follow.Even a few sessions can bring noticeable improvements.

In conclusion

Progressive relaxation is a small but powerful tool.It is one of the techniques I use in therapy — and one I often recommend to parents because it is simple, effective and accessible for every child.
